Brazilcartoon raised the question: “Plagiarism or Coincidence?” about the work awarded in the 34th edition of The Piracicaba’s Humor Exhibition under the authorship of Evaristo Daniel. The work was similar to the Cau Gomez’s cartoon, which competed in the Pernambuco’s Exhibition / FIHQ 2006 and after that, the winner loses his prize. Brazilcartoon was the 1st website to raise the issue because it is concerned with publicizing, knowing and covering all events: exhibitions, pictures, rules, regulations and results. The Gallery of the FIHQ 2006 is also available on the website.
According to “Blog dos Quadrinhos”, the president of the Organizing Comittee of the exhibition, Ricardo Viveiros, suspended the delivery of the prize for the 1st place in the category Cartoon. This decision was taken because the drawing done by Evaristo may be plagiarism, when compared to the work of the cartoonist Cau Gуmez. In 2001, a prize was suspended in the Piracicaba’s exhibition, but not due to plagiarism. Still, according to Ricardo Viveiros the case will be solve in a court of law, if someone makes a formal complaint. “I need to follow the law. My “dope test” is the justice. I am not able to judge plagiarism”, says the president of the organizing comittee. Cau Gomez says he does not know if he will sue the oponent or not. “I need to ask some people for advive to know if this is viable or not, but I see a lot of coincidence in both cartoons. I deeply believe that the real cartoon has to be above all suspicious”, says the cartoonist. The Cau Gomez’s cartoon of a cannibal competed in the Pernambuco’s Exhibition, which is an event conected to FIHQ (International Festival of Humor and Comics) last year. Also, it can be seen in his virtual portfolio. Word has it that there is another version of the cartoon done three years ago. “It is difficult to characterize two variables, but is necessary that the jury pay careful attention to the flow of cartoons on the Internet”. States Cau gуmez. There were two juries in the 34th edition of the exhibition, each one consisted of sevem members. This jury had three international names: Marlene Pohle – Germany, Luis Humberto Marcos – Portugal and Xaquim Marin – Spain. The other ones were Brazilian. For Evaristo Daniel Rodrigues, author of the cartoon awarded in Piracicaba it is just a “mere coincidence”. He Said he had never seen that drawing before and the work submitted to the Piracicaba’s Exhibition is his creation, but recognizes that there are similarities. “What I can say for sure is that they are very alike. What I do not want is that people think I am an opportunist” says the artist. If the prize is definetely suspended, the first place goes, apparently, to one of the two artists included in the list of Honorable mention in the category Cartoon.
